Lots of guys with trucks are out there in Austin and Williamson County. All are willing to take your cash and take your car to your desired location. Are all companies the same? No.
Do you trust just any company to come into your house for a repair or do you check credentials? After all, for most people, after their home, their car is their biggest asset. How do you know how to sort out the best company for your car? Here are some easy things to look for.
The old adage of too good to be true applies. If anyone offers you a $60 dollar tow, beware. This tow company has the minimum required insurance, if any. Beware.
Ask for their TDLR number. Just like electrical or plumbing companies, towing is regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Legitimate companies must have a TDLR number on their trucks.
There are different levels of licenses and this is very important to you!
Consent tow – this means the tow truck can tow your car as long as you are present and give permission. This certification carries the most risk as the insurance limits are the lowest for the tow company.
PPI – This stands for Private Property Impound. These are the trucks that tow vehicles from apartments and other places such as shopping centers. These trucks are licensed to tow for you under the consent low law.
IM – Incident Management license. This is the gold standard of towing certification. These trucks and drivers have been vetted by law enforcement to tow on their behalf. This certification requires multiple vehicle inspections, ability to respond to law enforcement tows and carries a very high level of insurance.
Reviews – This is vital. If you are stranded on the road look for a company with high stars. If this company also has the IM certification that is a good bet. A company with low reviews and bad ratings, beware.
